Senior portraits are all about celebrating a unique stage of life, and what better way to do that than with the beauty of water? One of my favorite places to photograph is a nearby creek and lake; both offer a natural playground for capturing creative, heartfelt, and unique images. From serene reflections to splashing fun, water brings a whole new level of expression to senior portraits. Whether we’re photographing along the shore, on the rocks, or even in the water, here are some of the exciting ways we can use water to make senior photos unforgettable.
Reflections: Reflections in water are mesmerizing, and lake on our property provides a smooth surface to create mirror-like shots. By positioning the senior near the water's edge, we can capture the reflection, adding a symbolic and artistic touch to their portrait. It’s a beautiful way to represent looking back while still moving forward.
Barefoot Moments: I encourage seniors to go barefoot in the creek. This can make the photos feel spontaneous and carefree (it also creates a beautiful smile or laugh). Standing in the cool water, one can enjoy a playful moment, making the portraits feel as refreshing and fun as the experience itself.
Outfits with Movement: Long skirts, loose shirts, and flowing dresses add a sense of movement to portraits, especially when they catch the breeze or trail in the water. This creates a soft, dynamic effect that works beautifully with water, making each photo feel like it’s part of a story.
Going All-In: Fun Shots in the Water
For those who want to make their senior portraits completely unique, we can have a little fun by going all-in—literally! If you're up for it, we can capture shots of you sitting, standing, or even lying in shallow water.
